چکیده

Metallic surface states on semiconducting substrates provide an opportunity to study low-dimensional electrons decoupled from the bulk. Angle resolved photoemission is used to determine the Fermi surface, group velocity, and effective mass for surface states on Si(111))3)-Ag, Si(111))3)-Au, and Si(111)A21 3A21-(Ag1Au). For Si(111))3)-Ag the Fermi surface consists of small electron pockets populated by electrons from a few % excess Ag. For Si(111)A213A21-(Ag1Au) the pockets increase their size corresponding to a filling by three electrons per unit cell. The A213A21 superlattice leads to an intricate surface umklapp pattern and to minigaps of 110 meV, giving an interaction potential of 55 meV for the A213A21 superlattice.

Electronic structure of atomic chains on vicinal Si „ 111 ... - Au

Unusual electronic states are found for gold-induced chain and ladder structures on vicinal Si~111! surfaces, such as Si(111)532-Au and Si~557!-Au. As two-dimensional reference the Si(111)A33A3-Au surface is investigated. The highly stepped Si~557!-Au surface is metallic, despite an even electron count. That is explained by two half-filled, nearly degenerate bands. On the Si(111)532-Au surface ...

Electronic and magnetic properties of zigzag graphene nanoribbons on the (111) surface of Cu, Ag, and Au.

We carry out an ab initio study of the structural, electronic, and magnetic properties of zigzag graphene nanoribbons on Cu(111), Ag(111), and Au(111). Both, H-free and H-terminated nanoribbons are considered revealing that the nanoribbons invariably possess edge states when deposited on these surfaces. In spite of this, they do not exhibit a significant magnetization at the edge, with the exce...

Structural and electronic properties of graphene nanoflakes on Au(111) and Ag(111)

We investigate the electronic properties of graphene nanoflakes on Ag(111) and Au(111) surfaces by means of scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy as well as density functional theory calculations. Quasiparticle interference mapping allows for the clear distinction of substrate-derived contributions in scattering and those originating from graphene nanoflakes. Our analysis shows that th...

Role of Si adatoms in the Si„111...-Au„532... quasi-one-dimensional system

The unoccupied electronic states of the Si~111!-Au(532) system have been studied, using inverse photoemission. Striking similarities exist between the unoccupied bands of the Si~111!-Au(532) system and the Si~111!-(737) and Si~111!-Au(A33A3)R30° systems. We argue that these similarities suggest that the Si~111!-Au(532) system contains Si adatoms, and that the adatom-induced surface states domin...

PTCDA on Au(111), Ag(111) and Cu(111): Correlation of interface charge transfer to bonding distance

The electronic structure at the interfaces of 3,4,9,10-perylene tetracarboxylic dianhydride (PTCDA) and the metal surfaces Au(111), Ag(111) and Cu(111) was investigated using ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy (UPS). By combining these results with recent X-ray standing wave data from PTCDA on the same substrates clear correlation between the electronic properties and the interface geometry...
